Hi, I’m Deborah Hartley and in December 2018 the latest chapter of my life began when my husband, Wayne and I shifted to the gorgeous Schnapper Point in the heart of the Kenepuru Sounds.
Schnapper Connections was formed from Wayne connecting people via business telecommunications solutions, whilst I connect individuals to their own inner wisdom to enable “healing thyself”. I also encourage the connection within communities with a common interest of greater health across the spectrum of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Together we are the ambassadors of this gorgeous 80 acres of coastal regenerating native bushland. We are discovering the benefits of living off grid, relying on solar, wind and hydro, and learning to grow our own sustainable garden and orchard. It fills my bucket to have the honour of sharing this sacred place with others by hosting intimate personalised retreats, seminars or workshops. We also provide accommodation for people to escape, relax, regenerate and reconnect with nature. I get to experience new-found admiration, each time I see a new person’s reaction, at their first glimpse of this place and its view.
My purpose in life has always been to serve others in a health capacity. My 35 years of Nursing and having been a Midwife, and my 11 years of being an owner/operator of my own Natural health business on the Kapiti Coast, have led me to where I am in this moment - of realising my dream of being able to connect people to an ever evolving range of health information and modalities in a healing tranquil retreat setting. Whether it be through sharing the knowledge and skills I've learnt along the way, or hosting another health professional's wisdom, Schnapper Point is the perfect space.
I now also offer services as the local massage therapist by coming to your place, or meeting you at the stunning Te Mahia clinic room. I run yoga classes for the local community at the Honey House in the Mahau Sounds or onsite for staying guests. I can lead meditation sessions and have given mental health seminars to help with anxiety and stress.

Having been born a Marlburian, leaving at 17 to pursue my nursing training in Nelson and then gaining experience abroad, I love the fact that I have gone full circle and am now giving back to my own community. Before returning to my roots, Wayne and I were blessed to raise 4 amazing well-grounded and loving now-adults, who have all grown to be contributors to their communities. With the empty nest, and its revolving door, I now work casual shifts at Marlborough Hospice. This aligns me to give better care to the dying resident in the Sounds who wishes to remain at home. Serendipity called within the first week of living here, when I met the awesome Sarah Carberry who is the cofounder of the Fare-well Trust. Very quickly I became the palliative nurse who is able to assist people to die with dignity in their own sacred environment.
I have been honoured to meet some amazing people in the Sounds, who it is now my privilege to call friends and colleagues. One being the outstanding Jenny Garing who, as caterer for our retreats, fulfils the role of nourishing our bellies and souls through her healthy nutritious food. Jenny has run fun educational food classes as part of a previous retreat itinerary. Together we have run one-day seminars in the Sounds promoting positive health and wellbeing, incorporating health enhancing foods and spices.
Another is Jann Hook who not only owns and lives at Te Mahia, but is a wedding and funeral celebrant. I have had the great fortune to have facilitated a wedding at Schnapper Point for dear friends, where Jann’s services as their celebrant made it so personalised and special.
